How to Discourage a Puppy From Biting

Biting is perfectly normal behavior for young puppies. In the early months of life, a puppy will use its mouth to explore her environment. Puppies will commonly play-fight with other young dogs, as well as their owner. Play-fighting is good, but dont take it too far. Its important to teach a puppy what its okay to bite into, like food, and toys, and what is not, like human hands, furniture, and children.

Give a verbal reaction to the bite. If a puppy bites too hard, make a sound so the puppy knows that its crossed the line. Ow! or No! are common verbal commands you can give a puppy to let it know that its hurting you.

Give the puppy something that its allowed to bite into. This can be a toy, or a chew toy. Keep a proper biting alternative around the puppy at all times. Puppies need things to chew on, so naturally they will begin to learn what is proper to chew on if they are given the option.

If the problem persists, pick up the puppy by the scruff of the neck and give him a firm shake. Say no. Put the puppy down. This technique shouldnt be used for all cases, but its a solid way of teaching the dog that what it is doing is wrong.
