Christmas with Lewis and Harry

I have two dogs staying with me for several weeks, including the Christmas period.
Lewis is a Collie who displays a most unusual and initially scary trait; when hes very happy and submissive, he comes by name, wagging  his tail ...... with his top lip curled backed showing every tooth on his top jaw !
For the first timer, its a case of "help"!
But aggression is not part of this lovely dogs makeup. Lewis is very placid and has always fitted in really well here.
Equally placid is Harry, a Yellow Labrador. Like Lewis, this is not the first time that Harry has stayed with me and if truth be said, these two are always welcomed back because they are such nice dogs.
Photos will be taken very shortly, which will include Lewis lovely smile !

How to Train a Seven Week Labrador Puppy

How to Train a Seven Week Labrador Puppy

Labrador retrievers were initially bred in Newfoundland to help fishermen. As a result, they are known for being eager to please, energetic and water-loving. Fortunately, these traits make a Lab puppy easy to train. You will probably bring home your puppy when it is six to eight weeks old. This is the perfect time to begin teaching basic commands as well as manners for interactions with humans. Its also the best time to start potty training your Lab.

Instructions

    1

Socialize your seven-week-old Lab to as many people, dogs and situations as possible. Dog trainers and veterinarians agree that the best socialization period is seven to 14 weeks of age, though veterinarians caution you not to take your puppy out until it has received all its vaccinations. Compromise by inviting people to your house or holding your puppy rather than placing it on the ground. If your puppy seems overwhelmed or hesitant to greet, dont force it. "...Some people assume that it can be essential to get dog training tips earlier to getting their pets. Many people could find this interesting but a lot of people may recognize that this is a great tip to follow. The condition with some pet owners is they will get a dog and then find out that they are not suitable to be aware of them. In the end, they would abandon their pets in order to bring back their previous lives. These dog training tips can let people learn what they need to deal with and if they have the time to coach their dogs. These guidelines can be found on Secrets To Dog Training. Through the time to execute suitable dog training, you will get pleasure from a lifetime of comfortable a relationship with your ".... Have the stranger ignore the puppy until it feels brave enough to approach. When it does, praise it, and reward it with a treat.

    2

Begin potty training when you bring your Lab home. Although some breeds are challenging to housebreak, Labs usually learn quickly. If you cant supervise your puppy, put it in a crate or small room with a potty pad. When you are supervising, lead it outside every hour. If it goes, reward it and bring it back in. It does not go, continue to supervise, or put it in the crate. If you see it sniffing, run it outside. Anticipate your puppys needs.

    3

Teach your puppy to sit immediately. Labrador retrievers are known as exceptionally friendly. This means they are likely to jump all over you and your guests. Ignore this behavior until it stops. Dont look at or talk to your puppy. When it calms down, teach it to sit. To do this, hold a treat over its nose and move it slowly back toward the dogs rump. As its eyes follow the treat, it will sit. Say "sit" as he is doing it and then "good" and reward with the treat. After two or three repetitions, use your finger without the treat. Then, reward with a treat from your pocket. Before giving your Lab attention, always make it sit.

    4

Yell "ouch" if your Lab nips you. Be dramatic. When it pauses, offer it a toy to play with. If it bites you again, yell "ouch" and storm from the room. Labs are bred to use their mouths, so a seven-week-old puppy must be taught immediately not to put its teeth on humans. Because it is eager to please, this method is very effective. You can also teach "leave it." Do this by holding several treats in your hand. Offer one or two and say "take it" before each. Then, close your fist and say "leave it." Ignore all nipping, barking and pawing. When your puppy voluntarily leaves your fist alone, praise it and give it a reward. Once your puppy can ignore treats, practice with hands, shoes and other objects your puppy picks up.

    5

Practice loose-leash walking with your puppy from the first few days. Each time your puppy starts to pull, stop walking. When it turns to look at you, praise and start walking again. Repeat this consistently each time it pulls.

It was hot and humid today. When I left work the temp gauge on my truck read 91 degrees. Blah. But 91 degrees makes for a perfect excuse to have an evening of water related fun with Cleo. 2

Play with your puppy for several minutes before you leave. Play fetch or take the puppy for a walk, generally wearing the puppy out. Do not work the puppy up and get it excited right before you leave. Let the puppy calm down while you quietly leave the house without acknowledging the puppy.

    3

Give your puppy lots of toys to play with when you leave. Choose toys that make the puppy use its brain and keep it occupied while alone. Consider leaving a radio on or adopting another pet so they can entertain each other.

    4

Return to your home without making a big fuss over your puppy. Ignore the excited behavior of your puppy until you are settled. Calmly and quietly acknowledge your puppy and reward it for calm behavior.

With time and patience, most puppies eventually learn to be house trained.

Instructions

    1

Purchase the right sized crate. To work well for potty training, the crate must be neither too large nor too small to allow your puppy to stand and turn around. If in doubt, ask the store personnel for advice.

    2

Find a quiet spot for the crate and place the blanket and chew toy in it. Leave the door open and encourage your puppy to inspect inside. Lure a hesitant puppy into the crate with treats and offer praise when it goes inside. The goal is for the puppy to enjoy being in the crate.

    3

Take your puppy outside and wait until it does its business. When done, take your puppy inside and lure it into the crate with a treat. Once it is in the crate, give the treat, close the door and and let your puppy rest inside with the toy and blanket.

    4

Watch the puppy vigilantly for signs of needing to go outside to potty. Depending on its age, it may be able to control its urge for different lengths of time. Getting up, whining and sniffing may be signs it needs a bathroom break. Be swift in taking the puppy out.

    5

Praise your puppy lavishly when it successfully does business outdoors. Give it treats and show excitement. Your puppy will soon associate outside pottying with good things. With time and repetition, and as the puppy gains better bowel and bladder control, your puppy will eventually learn to give you advanced warning that it must go out.

Valid Complaint Or Dog Snobbery Puppy Project Cancelled In Charlottetown School

One thing that I absolutely do not tolerate is deceit, I loathe it.
If it is brought to my attention that someone is committing an out right act of deceit, I will look into the situation. Clearly, there are some serious questions that need to be answered as to the cancellation of The Prince Street Puppy Project in Charlottetown, Prince Edwrad Island.

The basis of the cancellation of The Prince Street Puppy Project was on the sole complaint of one Krista MacLeod that her son had taken an asthma attack due to a possible dog allergy. Now, that was stated in an article CBC had reported June 20th-2014: http://www.cbc.ca/m/news/canada/prince-edward-island/school-dog-program-upsets-parent-1.2682153

This is a screen shot from the CNN Facebook page as to dogs & allergies where Ms. MacLeod posted a comment as to the benefits of dogs outweighing allergies. Also, the direct link is here: http://ireport.cnn.com/topics/1080777

The Prince Street Puppy Project has been cancelled due to this particular complaint so I wanted to see if there was any truth behind Krista MacLeods supposed issue. It didnt take very long to discover some discrepencies as to her sons possible dog allergy related asthma attack.

Why is the School Board cancelling a clearly beneficial project for all students for one child?
If Krista MacLeods son has dog allergies then why does she allow her son to crawl in to dog crates WITH dogs?
If a child can be surrounded by dogs at home then why has this project been cancelled? The school had made arrangements to not have the dogs involved in this puppy project in her sons classroom so what is really going on here?

Given the screen shot of a conversation by Ms. MacLeod as to mutts perhaps, since she derives from a CKC breeder family her real issue is the mixed breed dogs involved in the Prince Street Puppy Project? Seems like a very fair question one could ask, does it not?

Look at the pictures (dated), read the article & if after you have read & observed all & you also have the same suspicions as to intent of complaint? Sign & Share the petition here: https://www.change.org/p/eastern-school-board-we-want-the-prince-street-puppy-program-to-be-reinstated-in-the-school?recruiter=23494736&utm_campaign=signature_receipt&utm_medium=email&utm_source=share_petition

Let Ms. MacLeod know that what she has done is wrong & shameful. Let her know that the children that have been involved with the Prince Street Puppy Project for three years do not deserve to have their dogs taken away. This project has been extremely beneficial & the children think of those dogs as theirs & due to one person their dogs are now lost.

Insist that the Eastern School Board reinstate the Prince Street Puppy Project in Charlottetown PEI!
This is an absolutely tragic situation for the kids & their dogs!
Sign the petition ??

How to Potty Train a Small Puppy

How to Potty Train a Small Puppy

New puppies bring a lot of joy to a family, but they also can create messes. There are a few basic rules to potty training a puppy. Most important, though, is to be willing to work at it. Given a little encouragement, all puppies be trained where they can and cannot go to do their business, leaving owners worry-free about their floors and furniture.

Instructions

    1

Keep your new puppy confined or crated at anytime you are not watching it. It is best to only let your puppy play in tiled rooms, initially, to minimize the damage if an accident happens.

    2

Implement a schedule to help potty train your puppy. Put it to bed and wake it up at the same times. Feed it at least four hours before bedtime and take away its water tray two hours before bedtime.

    3

Take your new puppy to the toilet after every meal--first thing in the morning, last thing at night and whenever it wakes up from a nap.

    4

Bring your puppy to the bathroom spot. Always take it there on a leash as this puts him at ease about going to the toilet while being taken for a walk.

    5

Wait for a few minutes after you think the puppy has finished defecating. Puppies often do not go all at once. If your puppy doesnt go, put it back in the crate for 15 minutes and then take it back to the potty spot again.

    6

Reward your puppy with a treat each time it goes. This will encourage it to do the same next time.

Pet Puppy Selection Simplified

I get asked frequently; how to select a pet puppy. I am going to avoid discussing breed, gender and working aptitude selection in this post (subjects I will address in future posts). Here I will focus on the most basic aspects of selecting a pet puppy.

Far too often puppy selection is made out to be complicated. When testing for social attraction, resistance to restraint, social and elevation dominance, touch/sound/sight sensitivity and prey/retrieve drive, we tend to lose sight of what I believe to be the most important trait a pet puppy can posses, confidence. Assessing confidence can be done simply and fairly informally.

The first impression is important, so start to observe the pup(s) from the moment you arrive. This initial introduction can be the best gauge of confidence. The outgoing pup(s) are confident and show properly developing social skills with people. Separate the pups to observe them individually as well. The pup(s) that shy away, avoid or bond quickly and closely to one person (while avoiding others) are lacking confidence and could develop antisocial or even dangerous behavior as they mature. As hard as it is to leave that cute, shy pup with the puppy-dog-eyes, you will likely be avoiding years of frustration by doing so.

Selecting a pup by color size or cuteness while disregarding temperament should be avoided. If you dont like what you see when evaluating a litters temperament do not settle. Be willing to leave without a pup and continue your search. When you select a confident puppy you will be setting yourself and the puppy up for a successful life together.

Look for future posts discussing breed, gender and energy level selection as well as selection for working aptitude.

Training Your Puppy In Order To Save Your Relationship

Dog training is a general skill that individuals who would like to bring up a dog or puppies, in the loved ones, must obtain. Some canines quickly learn and others are slow. There are numerous of ways to teach your pet dog, or pet dogs, along with the adhering to can help you coupled the journey to attaining the skills you will need.

As with nearly anything, strengthen the great behaviors from your dog. Make sure that you have pleasures convenient, or just use plenty of compliments for actions which can be good. This can educate your pet dog to try to obtain a treat, or perhaps your praise and strengthen for them that the things they just do was something you would like them to hold undertaking.

Be consistent in your role as package head with your puppy. Without the proper authority from you, your puppy will see this as the chance to create their selves as being the load up head. Anything you do in regard to coaching your puppy should adhere to this principle. Becoming the pack head along with your canine is a life-style modify that will be satisfying for the family pet.

Ensure your canine gets a lot of physical exercise and arousal. When puppies have absolutely nothing to do, they can lose interest. A bored puppy is hard to coach. As soon as your pet will get regular exercise, he will likely be much more content and can pay attention quicker. Both you and your puppy can operate or walk together day-to-day.

Just as support of proper actions when coaching your dog ought to be instant, so as well should consequence for poor behavior be fast. Expressing "no" inside a harsh tone of voice conveys your pet he has behaved inappropriately but he only hooks up the message using the specific behavior if it information is supplied just after that act.

Display your pet that you adore them and so are very proud of them. Its easy in puppy training to pay attention to the negative and try to show your pet that what they are performing is wrong. Make sure that you work to accentuate the optimistic and compliments them if they are succeeding.

Look for sparks which may result in bad habits from the dog. In case your canine is instantly displaying unwanted actions, maybe one thing has changed that day: Has he managed to be on a walk or has he been cooped up? Had been you eliminated all day when typically an individual reaches home? Dogs are animals of uniformity and when stuff change their actions can change at the same time.

When instruction your pet dog, it is very important add perform in to the exercise sessions. This will aid make your dog interested. Enjoy his toy and present him simply how much enjoyable you are having. This helps a dog with low enthusiasm to remain intrigued. When you wish him for taking a plaything, dont shove it at him, make him accept it of your stuff.

Be careful about your demeanor if you are education your dog. You need to remain relax, but assertive all the time. Will not present frustration or raise your sound. If you do this, your puppy will require that you shout orders to be able to follow them, if it is how he is educated.

When training your pet, you need to have patience. A client mindset can make the education approach significantly less stress filled for the the two of you. Keep in mind that puppies do want to remember to their owners, but could not generally understand what is desired of them.

Canines typically reply well to physical benefits when getting educated. Virtually all canines come with an really sizeable capacity for enjoy. That makes them reply adequately to incentives like stomach itching, back again petting and cleaning. Your pet desires to be loved and significantly likes you providing him devotion. Present your contentment with his success by doing this.

Make sure your backyard is free of charge from burrowing crazy pets and also hardwearing . puppy from digging. Some canines, particularly hunting types, will look when looking for prey. Getting humane methods to clear your garden of other creatures can help to stop this bothersome habits. Crazy creatures might be deterred or relocated in the interest of each your garden plus your animal.

You wont need to use canine snacks permanently to coach your dog. Over time plus your dog actually starts to find out, their obedience boosts and they will obey your purchases as a practice rather than an motion that gets recognized with goodies. Additionally it is good to utilize 1 kind of compliments when your canine does as you may requested.

One particular idea to remember when coaching your pet dog, that the the right time and also the predicted the right time of your own dogs measures are necessary. This is significant since this is 1 studying element which is present with all puppies. Although distinct canines require diverse educating approaches, timing can be a conversation approach that can help you get accomplishment whatever you attempt.

Apply your pet with normal water to dissuade poor habits at home. Your dog learns a few things arent ok. Eventually, your pet dog will no very long screen these actions.

For dogs that dislike nail-trims, purchase them employed to getting their paws cut a step at a time. Initially, hang out with the dog when shes quiet and laying straight down. Effect her paws lightly throughout petting, and deal with and compliments when she doesnt respond. Keep on this technique over days and move it up to carefully getting her paws. Youll ultimately present the nail trimmers with no trim, then lastly, cutting. Its a long street, but it will save you money on nail trims in the future.

Each and every connection, second and condition can be a chance to learn to your canine. As you cant manage the environment close to you, you may manage how you will interact with your dog. Keep a made up manner when youre working together with your puppy, and do not frighten him, even when youre frustrated or irritated.

Conclusively, using ideas from this information will show to be a prosperous portion within your aim to exercise your pet or dogs. While you are open to different suggestions and will experiment with different tactics using learning from mistakes, there are actually what matches your needs, through the instruction of your furry family member.

Puppy Probation

Whats it got to do with Puppy Probation?
From structure comes respect.
 With respect, Chuckie earns freedom.
Even the freedom to shamelessly pose in the landscape like friggin Lassie.

Ive recently recently received so many requests for my Puppy Probation handout that I decided to put it here for easy access.

If you have been in dogs for any length of time, you have seen various flavors of this kind of protocol -- "Nothing in Life is Free" is a popular title, though that title is slapped onto many different sets of instructions. Job Evans called his a "Radical Regime For Recalcitrant Rovers," which, Dude, just, no. Most credible trainers have some sort of shot-gun approach to dogs who are generally pills, and it is very similar to the new dog burn-in program that each recommends. This one is mine.  I tweak it about once every ten years, which seems about right.

The thing about shot-gun approaches is, they arent very scientific. When Puppy Probation "works" (which it almost always does when the dog owners actually follow through and get the whole family on-board), we have no way of knowing what worked for a given dog. Items 1, 5, and 7? Items 2 and 10 only? Every item was totally necessary? The gestalt of each item interacting? The simple fact of a change? The owners expectations?

Science-bitch dog trainer wants to tease apart all the variables and find the golden thread at the core, discard the unnecessary, reduce the problem and the solution to evidence-based, coherent purity.

Neandertal dog trainer tells her to STFU. Dont care. Just trying to fix dog. Something worked. Dont matter if it was the one pellet at the edge of the grouping or all 30 of them. Keep doing.

If you would like a copy of Puppy Probation to print out on two pages and tape to your fridge -- recommended -- you can print a PDF from here.

I do not offer specific dog training advice to strangers online, so specific questions about applications will probably be ignored.

PUPPY PROBATION

Puppy Probation is a re-ordering and rehabilitation program for dogs who are dominant, unruly, aggressive, wild, unfocused, derpy and destructive, or who are showing any apparently isolated undesired behavior. It is also a very suitable regimen for newly-adopted untrained dogs.

Its aim is to change your dogs attitude by reducing his choices to a very clear set of simple options and requiring him to work for the things that he wants. It is not punishment. You must not have a "gotcha" attitude during the probation period; rather, you should think of it as a time to re-order the dogs world so that he can learn to respond by being pleasant and cooperative instead of wild and bossy. He will begin to see you as a credible, competent leader, and will love and respect you for it.

Many of the Puppy Probation provisions involve changing your behavior, not your dogs. If
you do not consistently follow through on the protocol, even though the rules seem unrelated to the problem at hand, you are unlikely to achieve the desired change If you start Probation and then apply it inconsistently, or back off when your dogs behavior worsens, you will have done more damage than no training at all -- you will have taught your dog that you are unreliable, and that he can succeed at getting what he wants in the moment by resisting you.

Puppy Probation lasts a minimum of one month, and is applied along with obedience training and other interventions to address the specific behavior problems that your dog is exhibiting. Items that are underlined are habits and rituals that you should apply to your dog for his whole life.

(1) The dog is confined to his crate (in your bedroom) at night, and
confined when you are away.
He is not allowed to choose his own sleeping place or roam the house unsupervised.
But he is allowed to be near you while you sleep. Remember, isolation is punishment,
and he will feel resentful if you isolate him every night.

(2) Two obedience sessions every day.
Work your dog on the obedience commands that he knows and introduce new commands in structured ten-minute sessions twice a day. Be absolutely firm and consistent during these sessions, and ask your dog to progress each day. Do not use treats in obedience sessions beyond the teaching phase of new commands, but praise lavishly.

(3) The long down
If your dog knows how to down and stay, he must do it once a day for a half-hour (minimum). If he does not know the down-stay, start teaching it now, and immediately begin the "Sit on the Dog" exercise every day.

(4) Nothing is free
When your dog comes to you for petting, play, or attention, he must obey a command before he gets it (sit, down, heel). He must sit while you put his dinner down and wait to eat until you tell him okay. He must not be free-fed; dinner bowl comes up five minutes after you put it down. There should be no prolonged or absent-minded petting sessions, and absolutely NO nudging, pawing, barking or whining to get attention.

(5) Time out
When your dog is being a pest, he goes to his crate for ten minutes to a half-hour of time out. Dont inject a lot of drama in this, just quietly get him out of your hair. (Or require a down for the same period, if you can watch him and enforce it.)

(6) You control the space
Your dog gets no furniture privileges. If he is in your way, he must yield -- dont step around or over him. He must wait at the door for your permission to go through, and for permission to jump out of or into the car.

(7) Get a grip
The dog wears a martingale training collar with a tab or four-foot leash all the time when someone is home or he is at liberty, so that you able to easily catch and correct him.

(8) Hit the dirt
Command him to down whenever the mood strikes you, and enforce each command. He should perform a minimum of fifty downs a day. Have him do "situps" -- a sitdown- sit-down sequence. At least ten times a day, roll him belly-up. Reassure or center him with a quiet "nose hug" or scruff tug whenever he needs it.

(9) Run it off
Your dog needs exercise to vent off his energy if he is to pay attention. Give him one hour of solid exercise a day -- chasing a ball, structured play, swimming, or jogging with you.

(10) Tone it down
You have probably been yelling at your little canine terrorist when he acts up, which may be all the time. You are probably unaware of this. Stop it now. Practice silent physical corrections. Hold daily near-silent eye contact sessions, and reward him quietly for looking to you. All commands are to be given in a normal tone of voice. Praise and correction should be titrated to the dogs temperament and the circumstances, with the goal never to get the dog either hyped-up or cowed.

The Anatomy of Holiday Puppy Photo Shoot

Warning: Cuteness Overload!!
SEASONS GREETINGS!!! My gift to you readers this festive season is oodles of cute GSP Puppy holiday inspired photos! Regular followers of this blog and corresponding facebook page are well aware that I occasionally (ok...more than occasionally) dress up our two German Shorthaired Pointers in some bizarre holiday attire. Its become a tradition since I first dressed Cleo up as the Elusive Easter Pointer several years ago. Since then both Cleo and Luna have been adorned in sparkly Tutus, Snorkle gear....you name it.

Santa is looking a little extra dapper this year

I knew this year I would have a rare opportunity considering Cleo blessed us with 8 beautiful puppies 4 weeks ago. I started buying props and outfits weeks before the pups had even whelped. Jim feels its incorrigible behavior but lets be honest.....its just fantastic planning.

I solicited the help of my best buddy Jackie Secan (The Thelma to my Louise) to give me a hand and be my primetime puppy stager. Jim was thrilled Jackie was in town to help me and he used it as an opportunity to retreat to the safety of the woods with Cleo and Luna in tow.

This is Sleepy.  The less well known 10th reindeer.

Id like to note that having a puppy stager is invaluable because there is no way to get quality shots without some help. When dealing with adult dogs I can whoa them and bribe them with tasty treats. With little puppies you are completely at their mercy. So for all the decent shots you manage to capture there are just as many awful ones. Ive included a few bloopers below for your amusement.

Sometimes you get photobombed

The talent can walk off the set

This is what happens when Santas sleigh goes from zero

to sixty (Hold on to your britches)

Wardrobe malfunctions can and do occur

And the talent can fall asleep

We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season! Be sure to check us out and follow our shenanigans on facebook at Adventures of a German Shorthaired Pointer.
