The Low down On Crufts 2013

The worlds biggest and best celebration of dogs takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from the 7th-10th March 2013. Crufts dog show has a long history and was first set up in 1891 and names after its founder Charles Cruft. The very first Crufts was held at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington and attracts 2,437 entries from 36 breed of dogs. In 2012 the number of entries was around 26,000 with a record number of overseas entrants too, a far cry from the first Crufts show held over 100 years ago.

As any dog lover will tell you Crufts isnt just about the competition between pure breed dogs, but a celebration of all dogs and the role they play in human society. Working dogs are a huge part of everyday life for a gamekeeper or a shepherd working hard to ensure the safety of farm livestock in the fields. Dont lets forget the working dogs in everyday life such as search and rescue dogs and police dogs. Dogs also play a bit part in the lives of soldiers and immigration authorities being used as sniffer dogs to sniff out illegal drugs and bombs. Working dogs are celebrated in several classes throughout the Crufts show.

Kennel club breeders are present at Crufts show and on hand to answer any questions you may have about pedigree dogs and owning a pedigree dog. Anything you need to know about training your dog to feeding and breeding your dogs. There are hundreds of trade stands at Crufts dog show selling everything imaginable for dogs and dog owners. Each of the 4 days are packed full of events from morning until night, the main arena seat 6,000, there are seven groups of dogs competing in their own classes and the winners competing against the other classes for best in show.

The seven groups are: Working, Hound, Gundogs, Utility, Terrier, Pastoral and Toy. All the dogs in the best of show class will be judges for their temperament, coat, and overall health and condition and those showing the characteristics that are closest to the Kennel Club breed standard. A fantastic four days for all dog lovers no matter what breed of dog you have, but do note that no dogs other than those that are competing or registered guide dogs are allowed into the show.
