New Puppy Need Training

Its great that youre thinking about training before you get a puppy. For many people, its an overlooked afterthought. There are a few very important things that you will need to do and teach your new puppy. First of all, it is a common mistake that people give their puppies too much freedom, too soon. Puppies need to be confined when you are not able to watch them, just like a toddler. There are many things that they can get into that can cause severe harm. Also, for the purpose of house training, the puppy needs to learn strict rules and boundaries or you could easily end up with a one year old dog who is still not house trained.

Secondly, it is very important to teach your puppy bite inhibition. Up till now, the momma dog and the litter mates have taught your puppy this, but you need to continue the training. Most people teach their puppies not to bite at all, which you should do a month or 2 down the road, but in the meantime you need to teach puppy how hard is too hard. This is a very important skill, especially with kids, because if a tail gets stepped on or slammed in the door, we dont want puppy to turn around and take off a finger. When you play with the pup, allow him to grab your hands (adults only please!) and then yelp! like a puppy would to show him it is too hard when they use their teeth. Next, resume play but his time, give puppy a nice soft toy to chew on.

Thirdly, puppy socialization is very important. You will hear many people say that your pup should not be exposed to other dogs until all of the vaccinations are given. I do not agree with this. The socialization aspect is highly important and it can be a mistake not to have your puppy socialize with other dogs prior to receiving all vaccinations. Of course, this is 100% your call as you need to consider risk factor for diseases like Parvo-virus. But in my opinion, socialization outweighs the health risk. I would recommend that your puppy has its first 2 sets of vaccinations, which are 1 week apart, before they come to a park or dog socialization group.
